Puffed Rice Upma / Pori Upma


Puffed Rice upma is an easy and tasty breakfast which can also be served as snack along with an evening coffee or tea. The preparation is similar to regular upma except for the water ratio. Only little water is required to soften the puffed rice, so be careful while adding water. This can be eaten as such without side dish but this can also be served with onion raita.


Ingredients :

5 Cups Puffed Rice / Arisi Pori
1 Onion, Finely chopped 
2 Green chilles, chopped / sliced diagonally 
2 Springs of Curry leaves
2 Tsp Oil 
1/2 Tsp Mustard seeds 
1/2 Tsp Jeera / Cumin seeds 
1 Tbsp Chana dal 
1 Tbsp Ground nuts 
A pinch of Hing 
Less than 1/4 Tsp Turmeric powder 
Salt to taste 
Coriander leaves, for garnishing 

Method :

Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds followed by jeera, hing, channa dal and ground nuts.

Saute and add the sliced chillies along with curry leaves and turmeric powder.

Add the chopped onion and saute till the color changes.

Add the puffed rice and salt.

Sprinkle little water evenly and mix well.

Simmer the flame and cook it for couple of minutes.

Once the puffed rice turns soft, switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.

Serve hot.


Serving Options :

Serve with Onion Raita.
