Protein rich nutritious pongal prepared using millet and green gram is an excellent way to start a day. I have used foxtail millet in this recipe but any millet can be used. The green gram is soaked overnight and cooked along with the millet is finally seasoned to give a delicious and healthy pongal.
3/4 Cup Millet ( I have used Foxtail Millet )
1/2 Cup Green gram / Pachapayar
2 Green chillies, chopped
2 Springs Curry leaves
1 inch Ginger piece, chopped
1 Tbsp Pepper corns
1 Tsp Cumin / Jeera seeds
1 Tsp Crushed Pepper
1 Tsp Gingelly oil
1 Tsp Olive oil or Cooking oil
Salt to taste
4 Cups of Water
Soak green gram over night and drain the water.
Wash the millet and add it in a pressure cooker along green gram followed by salt and water.
Pressure cook it for 5 - 6 whistles and switch off the flame.
Once the pressure gets released, open and mash the rice - dal mixture.
Add hot water and mix well if the consistency is hard.
Heat oil in a small pan and add cumin seeds followed by green chillies, ginger, pepper corns, curry leaves and crushed pepper.
Saute and add it to the pongal.
Mix well and serve hot.
Serving Options :
Serve hot with Roasted gram chutney or Kara kuzhambu.
